The job of an assistant optometrist at New Look: A key role to discover

The job of an assistant optometrist at New Look: A key role to discover

At New Look, we know that every member of our team plays an essential role in providing our customers with the best possible experience. Today, we're turning the spotlight on the job of assistant optometrist, a position that requires as much technical know-how as empathy. We asked a few questions to one of our assistant optometrists, Antoine Blaquière, who works at our La Place de la Cité location in Quebec City, to give you an insight into this role you'll want to discover!

What does an assistant optometrist do?

“My job is to connect patients with the optometrist, from booking the appointment to the eye exam. It's really multi-faceted: I do pre-tests, I make sure to maximize the optometrist's appointments on the days he's present, and I ensure impeccable customer service. Support from start to finish!"

The assistant optometrist is there to make sure everything runs smoothly before, during and after the eye exam.

What training do you need to become an assistant optometrist?

Good news: there's no diploma required!

“The training is given directly on site at New Look, which makes the job accessible to everyone. I started working part-time while I was studying, and now I've been full-time for almost 4 years.”

So, whether you're in the midst of a career change or simply curious about a new field, this is the perfect job to learn hands-on.

Why did you choose this job?

“Eyes have always fascinated me. It's a complex organ and it's really exciting to understand how vision works.”

In addition to working in a stimulating environment, this job allows you to deepen your knowledge of a subject that affects us all: visual health

What's a day in the life of an assistant optometrist like?

“A typical day? I record patient information, do their pre-tests, and sometimes the optometrist asks me for additional tests after the exam. I also spend a fair amount of time booking appointments, whether over the phone or in-person.”

In short, there's never a dull moment! Every day is different, with a balance between technical tasks and customer service.

What qualities are important for this job?

“Autonomy and judgment are essential. We have to manage several situations at the same time, whether it's pre-tests or appointments.”

Being an assistant optometrist means knowing how to adapt and being ready to take on challenges, all the while keeping a smile on your face. From versatility to the ability to handle several situations at once, this role requires both technical and personal skills!

What's the most rewarding aspect of your job?

“What makes me most proud is when patients are satisfied. Seeing them come out smiling after their exam makes you want to keep going.”

For many, the most gratifying moment is seeing the patient's satisfaction. It's a profession where every interaction counts, and where you can really make a difference in someone's day.

Any advice for those who want to get started?

“My best advice is to give it a try. The beginning can be difficult with so much to learn, but confidence comes with time.”

This profession offers great opportunities to grow, both personally and professionally. For those considering becoming an assistant optometrist, the best advice is to give it a go!

In a few words, how would you describe New Look?

“New Look is a company that really cares about the quality of its customers' vision!

The job of assistant optometrist at New Look is much more than pre-tests and appointments. It's a people-oriented adventure where you can develop your technical skills while working with great company. Want to join the team? Come and discover our career opportunities and be part of the adventure!
